This is a short introduction to the concept of spiritual enlightenment, what is the meaning of it and how to achieve it. This is the first part of three articles on the subject – links to the next article is at the end of the text.

Many of you are looking for peace and happiness. When I ask my clients or people in general to define what would make them happy they give me a varying list of things that come to mind. It’s usually NOT material items but many concepts like love, happiness, peace freedom etc. On further conversation they usually talk as if they are striving – searching for these things. As if there is something to attain.
Let me tell you; There is nothing to attain. There are only aspects of yourself to discard. When you have successfully shed certain aspects of yourself it leaves you in your enlightened state. Here is where you will find peace, happiness, and many other desired states of “being”.
Spiritual Enlightenment
If you stand on any street corner and talk about enlightenment, most people say, “wait a minute, how the hell does that help me pay the bills?” and “don’t give me any of that religious crap.” There are many good reasons to seek enlightenment but before I discuss the practical applications, what is spiritual enlightenment?
Enlightenment is an ideal state of being that can be achieved via an ongoing process. It is the process of allowing “more light”, or the maximum amount of consciousness to shine through your physical being.
Let me explain it another way. When you are enlightened, you are liberated from the physical world. That means;
1. You have the ability to witness your thought process.
Your thoughts create your future physical reality. You currently identify with your thoughts. You live your life inside your thought processes and don’t realize that your thoughts are separate to you. The vast majority of your thinking is conducted without you being aware of what is being thought. You ride these thoughts to fruition, often to your detriment. When you are enlightened, you free yourself from being swept up in your thinking process and therefore liberate yourself from any result that is not your choice.
2. You are free from suffering
You currently suffer every time you wrestle with emotion, argue about something or agonize over a decision. Sometimes this is short lived and mild and at other times it is extremely painful and remains with you for a long period of time. Freedom from suffering is the ability to use your feelings instead of succumbing to emotion. When you are free from suffering you will probably still say something colourful when you stub your toe!
3. You are free of desire.
Desire means you are unsatisfied and in this state your wants are driven by emotion. Without desire you can still have, but your want is much closer to a preference. When you experience this you will understand freedom from the material world. This doesn’t mean you can’t have or pursue chocolate cake. It just means you don’t lust it and you are unaffected if you don’t get it.
4. You can see the truth.
The truth is the way that the world really is. Being able to see the truth means you see beyond the physical shell of others. You see who they really are. It means you can read between the lines and really hear what others are saying.
Search For Spiritual Enlightenment
Some people know the process of looking for spiritual enlightenment as “The search for the Holy Grail” However you do not find enlightenment. It is achieved by removing its obstacles. These obstacles are inside you and are created by your mind.
Notice how there is nothing said about religion. Notice also how there is no mention of morals and what you can and can’t do. Good, now you can find out just how it helps. Here are some practical examples.
Everyday Examples
I saw a father shout and get angry at his three or four year old son. This had a negative impact on the boy. Why did it happen? The father was last on a bus and there were no seats left. Before the bus could depart from the air-plane to the terminal the man had to be seated. Everyone was watching and waiting for him. The logical conclusion was for his son to sit on his knee. This didn’t register on the boy as he was too young to see what was going on.
The father got very upset and angry and started yelling at the boy to get up. The boy was momentarily paralysed at the sight of his father’s anger, which in the boys mind was for no reason. This made his father less patient and angrier, finally dragging the boy off his seat so he could sit down.
This sort of situation is a frequent occurrence. This doesn’t occur when you are in the process of enlightenment. You are able to remain calm in all situations. Anger doesn’t exist.
Listening
A sales person listens to his client and then fulfils a need or finds a solution in order to complete the sale. The key here is listening.
What happens in real life is that someone talks, and you only hear part of what they say. This is because as they talk your mind momentarily wanders and thinks in response to what they are saying. You may miss actual words in the conversation but more importantly you will miss the true meaning of what’s being said or implied by the words that come from your client’s mouth.
You do not have the ability to clearly read between the lines. When you are enlightened you are able to listen completely and to see clearly what is being said.
Shopping Blindfolded
Here is another way of looking at it. You are shopping for some new clothes along the most fashionable shopping strip in your city. The path ahead is filled with shop windows displaying anything and everything. As you walk, you daydream. As you daydream you are inside your thoughts and can’t see the shops. You step past each shop, unaware of what it contains. Every now and again you are aware of a shop, enter it and buy something that you like. However, you don’t know what you missed in each of the shop windows that you walked past whilst daydreaming. Everything you missed in your shopping spree represents an opportunity in life that you didn’t see.
When you are enlightened you can see the world with clarity. You get to choose what you want.
Spiritual Enlightenment For Anyone
You can have spiritual enlightenment because it’s not some mystical unattainable state I am enlightened as per the definition above and you can be too. Yes, just like the guys you hear about in India that sit around in their robes and share their wisdom and heal the sick. Yes, just like Buddha and Jesus were enlightened. Am I comparing myself to Buddha or Jesus? No, not at all, I am simply myself, Aymen. Does it mean that I am a spiritual scholar? No. Does it mean I am better than you? No. It just means that my level of consciousness has been raised to a certain state. In this state I can help you raise your consciousness. I do this mostly by transmitting energy in the form of idea’s and words.
You can also be enlightened by going through a simple process…

i know an enlightened master who is 103 years old and he does not talk the same as you.
He does not need to sell anything.
He does not need money.
He only eats once per day.
He does not need government welfare

You would have to explain the difference between western and eastern enlightenment? Do you think one is better than the other? Do you think there is even a difference? I don’t see how location would make a difference to enlightenment.

103 years old is a fantastic achievement. There are many people who are not enlightened and they have reached 103 years old. 103 years old suggests a healthy body and mind, perhaps the abstinence from many of the poisons that people consume everyday. It also suggests that they have not yet achieved all they wish to achieve in their current lifetime.

I believe you when you say this – we are from different backgrounds and cultures. We have different lifestyles and life missions. In fact we are different people.

Perhaps you could explain why selling is bad? I do not need to sell anything? Money may not have changed hands but perhaps he has sold you his image and you have purchased it.

I do not need money. There is a huge difference between ‘needing’ and ‘having’

I eat many times per day. Eating once a day would help if i wished to have a very slow metabolism or i wanted to spend a long time every day in meditation. My lifestyle is very different to this.

I, like many people in the world do not need government welfare. Many “enlightened masters” in the eastern world survive on the generosity or charity of others – this is similar to government welfare. Others survive on “selling” the aura of their enlightenment – that of course would be selling.

I own many things, one of my favourite things that i own is my boat. One of the most useless things i own is a near new lawn mower that i haven’t used for many years as i pay someone to do the gardening. I have plenty of money and many bank accounts.
Its a common trap to fall into – the sacred texts all state in some way or another that you should be free from material possessions. This doesn’t mean don’t own any thing??? It means you learn to free yourself of the desire and need to own them. It means that you strive to have preference rather than be emotionally tied to these things.

You are implying he has been enlightened for a long time and that this is better than being enlightened for a shorter period. This may be true or false – how would you test this?
Of course someone may read your comment and think “wow all those years of missing out on the joys of life” They might be implying he is silly?

Many people who are not enlightened can do this. I can also talk about things that eastern mysticism cannot explain.

I wasn’t aware that there are different levels of enlightenment. Please read the article you have commented on to understand my level.
I remember lessons from long ago before i was enlightened. I remember that black belts who have achieved a very high level of “measured” competency at their martial art are not always better fighters than junior boxers, some athletes, naturally gifted untrained street fighters, and angry women.

are (usually) different.
Out from the choices .. is also the language.
We can talk about the same things – but since we don’t use “The
Same Language” .. it can SOUND AS IF – we talk about different

degrees”.
The Bible – is talking about “Planets of higher and lower degrees”.
The Bible .. call them — “Heavens” (plural).
Since we belive that “Heavens” (plural) doesn’t exist, we “translate”
it automaticly .. to “Heaven” – and have lost the connection.
Even IF we have discovered .. that Paul .. was taken to “The Third
Heaven” – we have problems with that .. and ends up with:

“Living soul” is translated from “The Original Word” – Nefersh – and is

Nefersh can mean:
-invisible creature (not of matter .. but of light)
-The Lowest Spritual Condition.
-A Living Soul (in “the spirit” of being “a spiritual condition – of light”).

-Ruah .. on the second step.
-Neshama .. on the Third step.
HERE I have two books that contradict one another.
One says that: “Ruah” – is “The Spirit of Light”.
The other one says that: “Neshama” is “The Spirit of Life” .. and that Ruah
means Spirit.
I have used .. The Claims of the last book .. as The sequence of “The
Ladder” . over.

In a situation of this kind .. we could have started a discussion .. that could
have delayed our development — rather heavily.
But we don’t.
We can see that .. “The Lowest Spiritual Condition” – which is one of the
meanings of “Nefesh” .. shows us – that there are levels of developments,
for spirits .. as well as humans.
What do we then do .. when we pray to Buddah?
-We pray to an empty step – in “A Ladder of Development”.
Does “The Buddhism” have a value?
-ABSOLUTE. To read what Buddha TEACH us .. about how to reach this level of development .. will help us to reach — “Enlightenment” (Read:
“Nirvana” .. if you wish).
So – here we see:
The teachings are the same – whether you follow – “Western learning” (read: Buddah) or “Eastern Learning” (read: Jesus).

Whether you become a doctor, a computer programmerer or a plummer – we all have “The Public School” .. as a foundation. 🙂

Its not the location that makes a difference. Its the cultural upbringing, perception on life and the Christian influence on society that makes westerners think in a different way, It took me over 10 years to understand the eastern way of thinking. It is very difficult for a westerner to understand the Asian way. To Westerners enlightenment is a new age fluffy way of thinking, Although any form of enlightenment is a good thing, but to say you are enlightened as Buddha is a different form of enlightenment all together. .
Someone that has spent years taking drugs coming to realize that they are on a endless cycle of self destruction, and then becoming clean is a form of enlightenment.
Someone who is enlightened has nothing left to achieve. Enlightenment is the ultimate attainment and there is nothing beyond this.

The difference between Easterners and Westerners is the art of giving without the thought of any type of gain. This is a common thing. in that part of the world. Here when we give to charity we want a receipt so we can make a tax deduction. Then the charity organization gets their cut out of it. . Giving to someone that is on the path to enlightenment and helping them in any way is one of the best forms of karma. An enlightened being has no use for money and therefore does not need to “sell” the path of enlightenment to others. After reading your post I was disappointed n to see a sales pitch page convincing people they need to buy this book
Anyone who has possession of a material object has an attraction or a desire to want that object. If one has no desire to have, one will have no desire to posses. For example. Last week I purchased a new LED TV. I did not need to have it as I already had a TV. I had no emotion connected to the TV and if I didn’t buy it I would not upset or excited either way.. I bought it because I had a desire to have it. What eventually convinced me to buy it was I thought other individuals need to eat too, so I thought I would circulate a bit of money. Someone that has attained enlightenment has no use for material objects.
I have no idea when he became enlightened, but that he became a monk at the age of 26. If someone becomes enlightened at the age of 20 or at old age close to death it would not matter. Once you are enlightened its the end, there is no more to attain. But someone that is enlightened at a younger age has the ability to teach others. Someone that is enlightened may think someone enjoying the physical joys of life is a waste of life because that person will have to be reborn to suffer again.
But yes there would be readers that would think like that he is silly. But as an enlightened being such as yourself you would come to realize that pleasing the physical body has no importance.
How you describe yourself indicates that you are at a higher level of awareness than the average person. This is a form of enlightenment but not the same form as an enlightened Monk or Buddha. You could say you are walking the path of enlightenment and if you have the ability to pull those out of the mud this is great.
The highest level of awareness is called Nibbana which is a Sanskrit work meaning end or disappear or no more something along those lines..
Noone can understand what Nibbana is until it is obtained. And those who have obtained do not advertise it.

Wow so many different ways of thinking in the world and so many generalisations and misconceptions.
I am sorry to see that you are misguided and unfortunately I know that what you are saying is believed by many people. This line of thinking is incorrect – however you are free to think it if you wish. I will do my best to reply to your comment as fully as possible. It’s a fantastic chance to clear up some of the most tragic lies in relation to the spiritual path.
Enlightenment happens anywhere in any society, culture or location. It can happen to anyone regardless of them having an eastern or western mind.
The fact that you took 10 years to understand the eastern way of thinking has no bearing on anything. Some of my readers may be thinking “wow aren’t you clever that’s so fast” and other may be thinking “wow aren’t you slow taking so long to understand something that any normal person could understand in a much shorter period of time” Plenty of “westerners” understand eastern thinking completely and the reverse is also true.
It’s difficult for anyone to understand anything that they are not exposed to. Once exposed to a certain concept/culture/idea/ information many people can learn things incredibly fast. There are many intelligent insightful people in the world – if they are not already enlightened they are very close – even though they have not yet been exposed to anything that I would deem as “spiritual”
Fluffy implies the opposite of hard-core. Many people in the world assume that because of certain lifestyle decisions or circumstances (poverty, celibacy, acts of solitude or discipline) certain people are so much more enlightened than others. This is one of the biggest jokes I have seen played on humanity. Its origins lie in the eastern world and it’s often ‘sold’ as a money spinner to gullible westerners in order to bring the tourist dollar to the east. This type of thinking was the actual catalyst for the series of articles on enlightenment. (watching a ‘western guru’ suck in a group of gullible ‘fluffy’ westerners on behalf of his ‘hard core’ enlightened Indian guru)
That’s a very interesting comment. I don’t claim to be as enlightened “as anyone” and I have made no comparisons to anyone in any of my work. Further to that – YOU don’t know how to measure it. You also don’t know Buddha. There may be many people in the world now who are more enlightened than he was – and for all you know that may be applicable to me and/or the man who runs our local pizza shop.
If we use your terminology – I don’t mean this (as above) type of enlightenment. I mean enlightenment like Buddha.
This is not true at all. You are taking as literal the symbolism found in many eastern texts. You are using the word enlightened to explain a symbolic state of being that implies you have perfected your soul to such a degree that you cease living and are instantly transformed to a higher non- physical state.
Enlightenment means the following:
(I’m taking a short cut here and copying widely accepted “eastern” definitions from various sources)
Buddhism the awakening to ultimate truth by which man is freed from the endless cycle of personal reincarnations to which all men are otherwise subject.
Hinduism a state of transcendent divine experience represented by Vishnu: regarded as a goal of all religion
Buddhism & Hinduism A blessed state in which the individual transcends desire and suffering and attains Nirvana.
Nirvana (also called Nibbana in other parts of India) is an ancient Sanskrit term used within Indian religions to describe the profound peace of mind that is acquired with liberation. In non Vedic thought, it is the state of being free from suffering. In Hindu philosophy, it is union with the Supreme being.
The word literally means “blown out” (as in a candle) and refers, in the Buddhist context, to the imperturbable stillness of mind after the fires of greed, hatred, and delusion have been finally extinguished.
No I would not need it in the context that you are implying. I don’t think you understand that money is neutral. It’s an energy exchange and store house. It is to be used for the easy utilization and exchange of energy. Your “eastern gurus” without money, use a more primitive form of exchange. They do something/or they “be” someone for the people around them in exchange for food and water. The western world (with all its faults) has transcended this many centuries ago.
Money which is energy can facilitate the sharing of this information. One enlightened individual can share so much more with the use of the “tool” of money. The only people that I have met (or heard of) that “say” they have no use for money are people with a poverty consciousness. They generally have self – worth issues and are struggling in poverty whilst their ego lies to them and tells them they are “good people” or perhaps noble in some way because they are poor.
Perhaps you are confusing your terms. It is impossible for YOU to tell from the outside the state of mind an individual has in his relationship to money. Just because someone “uses” something or “has” something does not make it a “need” Further to that I know people that are not enlightened and don’t “need” money.
This is a ridiculous statement. There are many wealthy people who give anonymously to charity. There are billions of dollars/hours of labour/acts of kindness are given away by ‘westerners’ without any gain.
This shows a complete and utter lack of understanding about money. You are implying that there is something wrong with getting a receipt in order to make a tax deduction. You are also implying that there is something wrong with charity workers getting paid. I don’t think you understand the scale and reach that western charity has. This would be unattainable without using some form of exchange medium. Money is what we have and use for that purpose.
You are NOT showing an understanding of Karma here by stating this well-worn ‘eastern’ line. It’s origins are cultural and facilitates the primitive medium of exchange that prevails in poverty stricken parts of the world. It’s also no different to giving to the church in the western world. The karma associated with giving anything to anyone is dependent on your internal state of mind and the emotions generated when the thoughts are initiated that drive you to give. It is completely independent of the receiver and what he is doing.
I have already explained what money is used for and any lengthier discussion is not for the comments section of these articles.
There is nothing wrong with ‘selling’ the path to enlightenment. I don’t “need” to “sell” the path of enlightenment to others. I own a building/property development company – we sell houses and associated things. Book sales or personal sessions in regard to enlightenment are an insignificant amount when compared to property sales. In fact I would be able to make much more money if I discarded this web site and all associated items as it would free up an enormous amount of time. In the days when I was a full time life coach most people wanted help with other more mundane – but just as important to them – things.
You are of course entitled to feel disappointed with whatever you wish but there is nothing wrong with having a sales pitch to sell my book.
The purpose of “having a sales pitch to sell” my book is so that I can use the energy I have available to me for something better that I find more pleasing or useful – other than using it to sell my book. It’s also handy to reach a much wider audience. The book was written because I had many people ask me questions via this web site and I was running short of time to reply. It’s much easier writing once and then referring people to the material afterwards.
The book has been “selling” for over ten years now and has been “sold” to people in over 35 countries. Lots of people like it – it can change your life.
Some people “need” the information contained in my book. They are welcome to find it elsewhere. You can actually find it for free – you would have to do all the work and piece all the information together yourself. This is only necessary if you are extremely poor and have lots of spare time to waste. That’s why I buy books. It’s a very cheap shortcut.
I have no control over who views my very static “sales pitch” as per industry standards the majority that view it – do not buy. Those that need it – buy it. I see this as a very efficient system of spreading information and it has no bearing on the subject of enlightenment.

Firstly you need to understand that there is nothing wrong with attraction It’s one of the “laws” that make the world function in a meaningful way. Secondly the ‘desire’ that you speak of in the context of enlightenment is an internal emotion generated by a specific thought process.
There is a difference between this ‘desire’ and “preference.” I, like so many people, have many items that I have” ownership” of because it has been a preference to take ownership of the said item. This is not possession – which implies emotion. There was no “desire” to possess.
Well I can’t accurately see what you are thinking unless I get closer to you. However experience tells me however that you are deluding yourself.
You have purchased a false ‘eastern image’ there are many “objects” that are extremely useful irrespective of the spiritual state of mind that a person has. I wonder if Sai Baba found his limousine useful. I wonder if the Dalai Lama walks or fly’s across continents, does he swim across oceans to spread his message around the world.

That’s true, enlightened people can think whatever they like. Un-enlightened people usually think around whatever stimulus they are subjected to. Enlightened people also know that someone enjoying the physical joys of life is not wasting their life. They know that balance is required. They know that suffering can be halted very quickly using readily available methods. They know the real reasons to be reborn and it is not “to suffer” however suffering may be a by-product of their physical existence if they have no control over their thoughts and emotions.
It may have no importance in the grander scheme of things but you were given a physical body to experience physical things. There is nothing wrong with experiencing physical pleasure, balance is required and your body has inbuilt mechanisms to show you this.
Again you unwittingly purchased an eastern image. To make this statement true you would need to have met an enlightened monk or Buddha himself and then meet me. You would also need a device or method to measure how much light we have each been infused with. The western world would love this type of gadget. You could your start your research with asking if anyone has actually met Buddha?

The word Nibbana is formed of Ni and Vana. This is achieved by applying simple concepts with some self-discipline over a period of time. Anyone that’s interested can do it. That’s why I wrote my book! Interested people will pay a small amount of money for it. Uninterested people will not. If you live across the road from me (I mean anyone or whoever does) and we knew each other I would tell you for free if you were interested. But I can’t live across the road from everyone in the world that’s interested. Fortunately there are many paths to enlightenment and many genuine people “selling” it.
The first part of your statement is very true. However I have obtained it and I am advertising it right now. If the second part of your statement were true then the word would not exist unless it was a label created by the non- enlightened for the enlightened, the only problem is these people wouldn’t know if someone was enlightened or wasn’t? It’s circular.
